Frequently Asked Questions:

Please send questions to conference2007@utkasce.org and we will post your question along with a response below as quickly as possible.

Question: Is a bag of charcoal allowed for the competition?

Answer: As long as it is type used for cooking and not intended for treatment.

Question: What container will the 4 Liter supply of contaminated water be presented to us in. Say, are you going to give us TWO 2-Liter Plastic Bottles, or just have it open in a bucket and give it to us to work on?

Answer: The water to be treated will be put in whatever you bring to the conference within the limitation of materials for this event. We will provide the container for your final treated water that is submitted for analysis.

Question: Can the standard five gallon buckets we use be altered in anyway
before the competiton? (i.e holes, screws etc)

Answer: Yes you may alter the buckets.  They are considered part of the items you may use to accomplish treatment of the water.

Question: Is aluminum sulfate, a common gardening product used to decrease the pH of soil, allowed?

Answer: No, the rules restrict items to those found in a typical American kitchen and gardening materials would not fit into that definition.

Question: Will we be allowed to bring a thermos filled with hot water to the competition if we do not intend to add the water to the sample? (we'd like to use it to make a pH changing indicator. The sample will be added to the water and then tested, but the water will not be added to the portion of the sample submitted for final testing.)

Answer: Yes you can use liquids for other purposes. The rules restrict a total of 100 ml of all liquids combined that can be added to the volume we provide for treatment. You cannot use dilution of your final sample as a treatment technique. "dilution is not a solution to pollution"
